ChatGPT can now show connected Google Drive files and folders inside Library, let you attach them with the composer or an @mention, and keep Google Docs, Sheets and Slides open beside your conversation. The feature is rolling out on the web to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare users. Shared Drives are not included in the initial Library experience, and mobile support is still to come, according to OpenAI’s August 13 release notes.
Quick setup: connect Google Drive to ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT on the web and select your profile icon.
- Go to Settings → Apps.
- Find Google Drive and select Connect.
- If the option appears for your plan or workspace, choose Sync.
- Sign in to the Google account that contains the files you want to use.
- Read the Google permission screen carefully, approve only if you are comfortable, and complete the connection.
- Wait for indexing. OpenAI says recently synced files can become searchable during a partial sync, while a large workspace can take from hours to days to finish.
These connection steps come from OpenAI’s official Google Drive sync setup guide. Workspace availability and controls can differ: Business and Enterprise admins may need to enable the app, and Enterprise/Edu Google Drive actions are off by default until an admin enables them.
How to add a Drive file to a ChatGPT conversation
- Start a new chat on the web.
- Select the + button beside the composer, then choose Add from Library; alternatively, type @ and select a Drive file.
- Choose a Google Doc, Sheet, Slide or another supported file.
- Ask ChatGPT to summarize, compare, analyze or create something from it.
- When a document opens beside the chat, review any proposed changes before allowing an update to the source file.
OpenAI says supported and authorized workflows can update the source file directly. Independent reporting also confirmed that the integration edits the actual Drive file rather than merely creating a static copy, so use a duplicate when testing an important workflow (9to5Mac).
