Canva Craft: How to Use It + 15 Copy-Paste Prompts

Canva Craft is Canva’s new image-generation model, available globally through Dream Lab. Open Canva, select Dream Lab from the lower-left panel, choose Craft if a model picker appears, paste one of the prompts below, select an aspect ratio, and generate. Canva says Craft can render at up to 2K resolution and supports more than 30 aspect ratios.[1]

Canva Craft quick-start checklist

  1. Sign in to Canva and open Dream Lab.
  2. Select Craft if Canva shows a model selector. Rollout interfaces can differ by account.
  3. Choose the final format before prompting: square post, portrait Story, landscape banner, presentation slide, poster, or a custom ratio.
  4. Describe the subject, layout, visible text, visual style, colors, lighting, and anything that must not appear.
  5. Generate several options, then check every word, logo, hand, product detail, and factual element.
  6. Use Canva’s editing tools or Magic Layers where available to refine individual elements.
  7. Export at the size required by the destination platform.

Craft is available to all Canva users, but “available” does not necessarily mean unlimited use. Canva’s pricing page says some AI features draw from a shared monthly allowance that varies by plan, so check the usage indicator shown in your account before a large batch.[1][3]

What is Canva Craft?

Canva Craft is the first foundation image model built and trained from scratch by Canva Research. Unlike a conventional prompt-to-pixels workflow, it uses two stages: first it plans the composition—including object placement, scale, visual hierarchy, and text—then a rendering model creates the image.[1]

That architecture is aimed at design-heavy work such as posters, social graphics, presentations, menus, and marketing assets. Canva says Craft was trained with an emphasis on human-made templates from its content library rather than primarily on photographs.[1] TechCrunch independently reported the launch, global Dream Lab access, API availability, and the same two-stage workflow.[2]

Important: claims about better typography, precision, and model rankings come from Canva. Treat every generated result as a draft and proofread it before publishing.

A prompt formula that works

Copy this template and replace the brackets:

Create a [asset type] for [audience/business] about [offer/topic]. Use a [visual style] with [color palette]. Place [main subject] in [position], leave [amount] negative space in [location], and show the exact headline “[text]”. Add [supporting elements]. Use [lighting/camera/composition]. Aspect ratio [ratio]. Avoid [unwanted elements]. Keep the layout clean, readable, and suitable for [platform/use].

The strongest prompts specify both the visual and the layout. If exact wording matters, keep it short and put it in quotation marks. Longer copy is usually safer to add in Canva’s normal text editor after generation.

Exact headline “MODERN VILLA FOR SALE”. Leave editable areas for location, bedrooms, and agent contact. A4 portrait. No agency logo, no invented property details, no people.

6. Ecommerce hero banner

Create a wide ecommerce homepage hero for wireless headphones. Matte-black headphones floating above a soft graphite surface with subtle sound-wave lines. Dramatic studio lighting, black and electric blue palette. Headline “FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS”. Leave the lower-left area clear for a button. 21:9 aspect ratio. No brand marks, no price, no extra accessories.

Create an energetic portrait poster for a community technology workshop. Diverse adults collaborating around laptops in a modern classroom, blue-to-magenta gradient overlays, geometric grid details. Exact headline “BUILD YOUR FIRST AI WORKFLOW”. Smaller text “Hands-on workshop”. Leave a clean block for date, venue, and registration URL. A3 portrait. No fake sponsor logos.

8. Podcast cover

Design a bold podcast cover called “THE PRACTICAL FUTURE”. Abstract human profile formed from layered paper, circuits, and city-map lines. Black, off-white, and vivid orange palette. Large readable title centered, small blank area for host name. Square 1:1. Editorial magazine style, no microphone cliché, no additional words.

9. Infographic background

Create a vertical infographic base titled “5 STEPS TO A SAFER PASSWORD”. Use five clearly separated numbered sections connected by a simple path, navy and teal palette, flat vector style, lock and shield motifs. Keep body areas blank so explanatory text can be added manually. 1080 × 1920 portrait. No paragraphs, no tiny labels.

10. Presentation title slide

Create a cinematic 16:9 presentation title slide for a quarterly marketing review. Abstract upward motion made from translucent data ribbons, dark charcoal background, lime and cyan highlights. A4 portrait. Prioritize hierarchy and editability over decoration.

13. App promo graphic

Create a polished mobile-app promotional image showing three smartphone screens for a habit tracker. Use abstract placeholder UI rather than copying a real app. Mint, navy, and white palette, soft 3D shadows, clear left-to-right progression. Exact headline “SMALL HABITS. REAL PROGRESS.” 4:5 aspect ratio. No app-store badges, reviews, ratings, or download claims.

14. Blog featured image

Create a clean editorial blog image about AI image-generation prompts. A designer’s desk with a laptop, layout sketches, color swatches, and floating prompt cards, viewed at a slight angle. Royal blue, lavender, and warm white palette. Add the exact short title “BETTER AI IMAGE PROMPTS”. 1200 × 675 landscape. No company logos and no unreadable interface text.

15. Seasonal sale template

Design a reusable portrait sale template for a small fashion store. Folded neutral clothing, textured paper shapes, subtle festive lights, burgundy and champagne palette. Exact headline “SEASONAL SALE”. Leave obvious editable fields for discount, dates, website, and terms. 4:5 aspect ratio. Do not invent a discount, deadline, brand, or legal text.

How to improve a weak result

Use one correction at a time so you can see what changed:

  • Layout is crowded: “Reduce the design to three focal elements and increase negative space around the headline.”
  • Text is wrong: “Remove all generated body copy. Keep only the exact headline ‘[TEXT]’.”
  • Subject position is wrong: “Keep the same style, but move the product to the right third and leave the left half empty.”
  • Colors drifted: “Use only these colors: navy #0B1F3A, cyan #20C5D8, and off-white #F7F4ED.”
  • The result looks generic: Add a specific art direction such as “Swiss editorial grid,” “paper-cut illustration,” or “soft daylight product photography.”
  • One object needs changing: Ask for a targeted edit rather than regenerating the entire composition; Craft’s planning architecture is intended to support more granular changes.[1]

Best workflow for text-heavy designs

AI image tools can still misspell words or produce inconsistent small text. A safer workflow is:

  1. Generate the composition with one short headline or no text.
  2. Move the result into a Canva design.
  3. Use Magic Layers if it is available and produces usable elements.
  4. Rebuild important wording with Canva’s normal text boxes.
  5. Check spelling, dates, prices, phone numbers, claims, and legal text manually.
  6. Export a proof and inspect it at the final display size.

This is especially important for ads, menus, event details, product labels, healthcare content, financial promotions, and public notices.

Canva Craft API and MCP status

Canva says Craft is available through its public API for developers who want image generation inside products such as marketing platforms, ecommerce tools, ad builders, and print services.[1] Check Canva’s current developer documentation for authentication, endpoint, pricing, and quota details before implementation; the launch announcement does not provide those operational details.

Canva also announced Craft support through the Canva MCP Server, but labeled that connection coming soon.[1] Do not assume ChatGPT, Gemini, or another agent can use Craft through MCP until Canva confirms that the integration is live for your account.

FAQ

Is Canva Craft free?

Canva says Craft is available to all Canva users globally.[1] However, Canva’s pricing information says some AI tools use plan-based monthly allowances, so free access may still have usage limits.[3]

Where do I find Canva Craft?
